August 17, 2008

Day 14 marked Flight 2 of the 2008 Victorian Poker Championships Main Event and the players were out in force as 207 entrants took to the felt. Today’s field included WSOP Champion Joe Hachem, Lee ‘Final Table’ Nelson, Sam Youssef, Tony ‘Bond18’ Dunst, Roy Bhasin and Leo Boxell.

The started late and ended early for Joe Hachem. After arriving late and finding his seat in the high-stakes area he doubled up, then doubled someone else up, doubled up again and then was eliminated at the hands of Roy Bhasin when he made a full house of tens over kings.

Sam Youssef was a runaway chip leader early on quickly soaring up to nearly 70,000 chips, but soon enough he would put back down to earth by Sam Khouiss when he ran queens into kings with all the money in preflop.

We saw the old horses of Australian poker leave the room including Lee Nelson, Roy Vandersluis, Michael ‘Sticky’ Guttman, Julius Colman and Martin Comer. Following them out the door were the online brigade including Tony ‘Bond18’ Dunst, Steve ‘stevoL’ Leonard and Roy ‘GodLikeRoy’ Bhasin.

The end of day leaders included Sam Khouiss, Ewan Morgan, David Borg and Harris Pavlou as 82 players would survive the day.

Tomorrow we will return with 129 players in total to play down to a final table of nine.  Michael Pinzone will carry the chip lead into Day 2 with over 200,000 chips.
